The first area of concern is something that affects over 50% of us at some point in our lives. Do you know what that is? Cancer. Have you ever thought about how a cancer diagnosis would impact your life today, and more specifically, how your finances would be impacted? Not a lot of people think about this, as it is not a pleasant topic. I do because I work in this industry, and I deal with topics like these on a day-to-day basis. So, let me tell you a little bit about what would happen typically if you were diagnosed with cancer.
Cancers are becoming more treatable now than they were in the past. It can typically take between 6-24 months to treat, the first 6-12 months of which, most people will be unable to continue working. This means you will either be on short, or long-term disability or EI, and you will see a 30-50% reduction in income. Your expenses are also going to increase because of medication, home modifications, and travel time. It is a misconception that the provincial health care system will take care of all the expenses, and this is simply not true. Of the most common breast and prostate cancers, the initial needles are upwards of $2,000, and this is an out-of-pocket expense. Typically it's not the cancer itself that destroys the family but the financial devastation it leaves in its wake, and with over 50% of the population being diagnosed its a serious issue. We can't allow you to stay unprotected. We can't stop you from getting cancer but we can make sure it doesn't cripple you or your families finances. And here's how;
Upon diagnosis, we will immediately pay out a lump of $10,000 tax free. This can be used for anything you need. House modifications, replacing loss of income and all the immediate medications.
What we know about cancer is that you can treat it, but it can often come back and recur regularly throughout the remainder of your life.
As such, we have built in a $150,000 lifetime treatment benefit that can be drawn from no matter how many times the cancer may re occur. Thats accumulated through a visit or an overnight stay in hospital for any treatments at $100 per visit and $200 if you have to stay.
This helps cover all the small things that add up like transportation costs (gas), food, parking, child care to name just a few.
You can see why so many members find this to be an absolutely necessity, right?
